St. Dorothy Circle

The Women of St. Regis are please to welcome the new Grounds Beautification Circle.

Missions and goals:
The Circle will coordinate the effort to beautify the church and school grounds. The end result will be an entire campus enveloped in an Eden of beauty - with gardens that will include natural and brick memorial walkways, shaded areas for rest and reflection, trees and shrubs, perennial and annual flower gardens.

This is a long-term project that began in the fall of 2007 with the design and planning stages of the gardens. The planting phases will be in unison with the Moments in Faith project.

St. Dorothy background:
Dorothy born in Caesarea, Cappadocia (now Armenia) and was martyred there c. 300. When young Dorothy was imprisoned for being a Christian, she converted two apostate women warders sent to convert her to paganism. This enraged the governor of Caesarea, who sentenced her to death. On the way to execution, Dorothy was cruelly baited by a lawyer named Theophilus for refusing to marry or to worship idols. He mockingly asked her to send him back some fruit and flowers from the garden she had joyously announced she would soon be in. Just as she knelt down for her execution, a child (or an angel) miraculously appeared with a basket of golden apples and roses, even though it was winter. She took a napkin and placed in it three roses and three apples. Then she begged a child to take them to Theophilus and tell him she would meet him in the garden. When he saw these gifts he himself was converted to Christianity.

In art, Saint Dorothy is a maiden carrying a basket of fruit and flowers, especially roses, which are her special attribute.
